Notes: LizQuen’s ‘Make It with You’ brings to primetime TV OFW stories

By Ibarra C. Mateo

Screen grab from Tonight With Boy Abunda / Jan. 13, 2020 episode

Set in Dubrovnik, a city in Croatia fabled for its limestone streets, baroque buildings, and the “endless shimmer of the Adriatic Sea,” the newest ABS-CBN Primetime Bida television series “Make It with You” brings to primetime slot the narrative of overseas Filipino workers.

Make It with You stars Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, who are staging their television comeback after almost two years of absence.

Soberano is “Billy,” a clever young lady who does odd jobs so she can save enough money to send to the Philippines. An added twist: she also works as a “match-maker”, a job that allows her to go to fancy restaurants, savor expensive dishes, and receive gifts, which she sells to her circle for more money to remit to her family. Scheming Billy is not averse to making more money out of people’s loneliness and miseries.

On the other hand, Gil is “Gabo”, a Filipino who joined a group of migrants packed inside a long-haul truck to illegally enter Croatia. Gabo is initially presented as a person trying to find his bearing.

Since Make It with You only premiered on Jan. 13, 2020, we do not know much about the two lead characters. A mix-up, however, led to the meeting of Billy and Gabo in a café.

Real-life couple Soberano and Gil are supported by Herbert Bautista (Billy’s father), Eddie Gutierrez (Billy grandfather), Ian Veneracion, Pokwang, Katya Santos, Fumiya Sankai, and Vangie Labalan. Bautista is also making a TV comeback after years of being the Quezon City mayor.

What interests me in Make It with You is the television station’s gamble to let one of its most bankable love teams (and among the most loved and appreciated in the industry) to shift to more mature roles of migrant Filipinos working or trying to find their souls in the Croatia, a country in Central and Southeast Europe and along the Adriatic Sea coast. Ordinary Filipinos may not be familiar with Croatia.

Croatia and Slovakia, according to a report by ABS-CBN News posted on Nov. 28, 2018, are interested in hiring Filipino workers for their hospitality industry jobs.

The Philippine Association of Service Exporters said about 1,000 workers are initially needed in Croatia and 600 in Slovakia, the news report added.

Maybe ABS-CBN’s foray in Croatia is a strategy for it to gain foothold in Central and Southeast Europe, where OFWs may soon flock. Maybe the OFW stories in Central and Southeast Europe offer a new twist to the trite tales of OFWS sacrifices and struggles.

Cinematographer Dexter Dela Peña’s deliciously gorgeous shots of Dubrovnik streets, walls, old buildings, and Adriatic Sea were arrestingly refreshing for a teleserye. Parang cine ang cinematography!

Dela Peña’s past credits include Baby Ruth Villarama-Chuck Gutierrez “Sunday Beauty Queen” (2016), Atom Magadia-Anne Prado-Magadia’s “Dagsin” (2016), and Villarama-Gutierrez’s “Jazz in Love (2013).

The tandem of Cathy Garcia-Molina and Richard Arellano direct Make It with You.

In the pilot episode, the two directors allowed the audience to absorb the picturesque Dubrovnik, with the camera closely following the blue and red pairs of shoes of Billy, with the two pairs of shoes possibly indicating the “two lives” Billy traverses. Many scenes were almost bare of dialogues, but the build-up of tension was palpable.

The psychologically and emotionally costly process of settling down in a new locale, a situation encountered by almost all OFWs, was shown with Gabo being robbed of his belongings, forcing him to collect plastic bottles which he sells to a recycling outlet. Undocumented and hungry, Gabo was also depicted as desperate for a job.

We will find out, as the television series unfolds the stories of Billy and Gabo and the small Filipino community in Dubrovnik, what kind of OFW narratives, (or discourse if one is allowed to use the heavy word) will be discussed and tackled by Make It with You.

Will the OFW narratives be palatable and “relatable” to millions of Filipinos watching ABS-CBN shows? Abangan.

And the black wolf ‘dances’ again

By Ibarra C. Mateo

It maybe the year of the rat, but it is the wolf which takes the centerstage at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) this February.

Poetess and playwright Virginia R. Moreno’s play, “Onyx Wolf,” dances again at the CCP Main Theater on Feb. 21-23, 2020. The Ballet Philippines’ “Itim Asu,” the title given to the Onyx Wolf as it metamorphosed into a dance production, is the company’s 4th offering in its 50th season.

Pop ballet Rama Hari, which runs on March 20-29, 2020, also at the CCP Main Theater, closes the season.

BP’s Itim Asu is based on three ritual scenes from Virginia Moreno’s award-winning drama, BP said.

“Ballet Philippines welcomes the year 2020 with the return of a modern classic and landmark production, Itim Asu, choreographed by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, with music by National Artist for Music Antonino R. Buenaventura,” the company said.

Ballet Philippines “restages a modern classic and landmark production, Itim Asu, which showcases its diverse and dynamic repertoire as well as the strength of its company in different dance styles,” BP said.

Before being transposed into dance in 1971 and called Itim Asu, Moreno’s Onyx Wolf won the 1969 National Historical Playwriting Contest. Later, Onyx Wolf was given the 3rd prize in the 1970 CCP Literary Contest.

Reyes’ Itim Asu was among the inaugural presentations at the CCP Little Theater in 1971, the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art said. In 1974, Itim Asu was listed as the lone Philippine entry in the Avant-Garde Staging Around the World.

Onyx Wolf-Itim Asu are fictional accounts of how the wife of a reform-minded Spanish Governor-General, Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante, took on their political opponents and avenged his death. Bustamante was assassinated in October 1719 by a mob opposed to his good governance program.

In the narrative, Bustamante was murdered by a group of friars, government officials, and guardia civil (soldiers). The leaders of the mob were said to be implicated in corruption cases the governor-general was investigating.

The Assassination

Not only playwrights and dancers were charmed by the Bustamante assassination plot. Even visual artists were intrigued by it.

Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, a 19th-century artist painted “El Asesinato del Gobernador Bustamante” (The Assassination of Governor Bustamante and His Son) in Barcelona. In 1905, the painting was first unveiled at the St. Louis Exposition in the US, where it was awarded a gold medal.

The painting is on display at the National Gallery of the National Museum of the Philippines, directly across from the famous Juan Luna’s Spoliarium. Luna and Hidalgo were contemporaries and friends.

The Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) described Hidalgo’s largest known work as “a dramatic depiction of the murder of Governor General Fernando Bustamante in 1719 by a mob of friars.”

“He is portrayed being brought down a grand staircase as his soldiers struggle to contain the massacre. The spectacle is enriched by bright colors and fine fixtures such as those of the elaborately embroidered standards, the governor’s clothes, and the surplice of a sacristan at the foreground right,” the description said.

“Dynamic composition, remarkable scale, and intensive portrayal of an actual event contribute to the bravura of this opus,” it continued.

Other numbers in the mixed bill “Itim Asu and Other Dances” are: “Glinka’s Valse,” choreography by Adam Sage; “The Weight on Our Toes,” by Erl Sorilla; “Carmen Pas De Deux,” by Augustus “Bam” Damian III; “We Men,” by Lester Reguindin, and “Ne neh le dej,” by David Campos.

Child actress Xia Vigor is the first child ambassador of the Save the Children Philippines, it was announced on Thursday / Dec. 12, 2019.

Save the Children Philippines said Vigor will help the organization “promote children’s rights to grow up healthy, educated, and protected from all harm.”

Vigor, 10, who stars in the movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” an entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), said she is “determined to bring positive change for every child.”

She aims to inspire children, especially those in marginalized situations, and hope ot inspire them “to never give up their dreams.”

To mark her designation, Vigor led a feeding program for children in a community in Navotas City.

The organization implements Project Nurture (Nutrition among Urban Poor Through Unified Response) in select communities in Navotas to reduce the number of deaths of children under 5 years old. The project involves a nutrition-specific intervention on children, focusing on their first 1,000 days of life.

“Whenever I meet other children, I always tell them to work hard to attain their dreams. I hope I can help them make those dreams become a reality with my new role as a Save the Children child ambassador,” Vigor said.

Vigor said she understood the “importance of sharing her blessings” at the age of 6 when she started joining her mother in outreach activities in the Mindoro provinces. They distributed slippers and school supplies to children of Mangyan families.

She said the sight of young children going to school barefoot and without school supplies has “moved” her.

Vigor is also active in campaigning for environmental protection and has joined tree-planting and coastal clean-up activities.

Lawyer Alberto Muyot, chief executive officer of Save the Children Philippines, said Vigor fits the role of a child ambassador because “she is very smart, articulate, and has the empathy toward children living in deprived situations.”

“Children around the world are speaking up for their rights, and Save the Children supports the realization of their right to be listened to, by providing a platform so they can speak up on matters that affect them,” Muyot said.

Vigor will be active in the organization’s campaigns on ending all forms of violence against children happening in homes, schools, and community settings.

Vigor will take part in fundraising activities during humanitarian response to help Save the Children bring life-saving emergency kits to children and their families affected by natural calamities, disasters, armed conflicts, and other emergencies.

National Artist Reyes ‘tweaks’ Cinderella for BP’s 50th season

By Ibarra C. Mateo

Ballet Philippines, under the guidance of its current artistic director and choreographer, National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, brings back Cinderella for its 3rd production celebrating its 50th season.

Reyes first choreographed and directed Cinderella for BP in 1981, featuring lead dancers Maricar Drilon, Gina Mariano, Cecile Sicangco, Nonoy Froilan, Robert Medina, and Brando Miranda.

In the 1981 version, Reyes simply wanted “to mount the most enchanting show for her very own children and ballet audience.”

For its 2019 reincarnation which runs Dec. 6-15, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater, Reyes taps the deep bench of BP talents and has called on other Filipino artists, too, for added glamor.

For example, BP’s Victor Maguad and Eugene Obille, who both had just played Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake last August, now essay the roles of Griselda and Prunella, respectively.

Former BP stalwart but now Australia-based Novy Bereber plays the Widow Brunhilda.

“Originally, I stayed away from casting male dancers in these roles as that was done so successfully by Frederick Ashton for the Sadler Wells Ballet — and I wanted to feature the comedic talents of our company members then — Edna Vida, Malu Rivera, and Hazel Sabas,” Reyes said.

“Today, we have such a strong array of male and female dancers with incredible talent and tremendous technical skills,” Reyes said.

“Why not take this opportunity to challenge the dancers, both female and male, to take on roles that demand so much more than the usual roles they have already done, with a completely different set of acting skills that can only deepen their own artistry,” Reyes said.

BP’s Cinderella has three national artists “collaborating.” Choreography and direction by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, musical score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky specially arranged by National Artist for Music Francisco Feliciano, with set and costume design by National Artist Salvador Bernal.

The rags-to-riches narrative of Cinderella will enthrall the audience as pumpkins turn into an exquisite carriage and glass slippers find their way back to the rightful princess.

The December production will be mounted by Nonoy Froilan, BP’s premier danseur for three decades. Froilan had essayed leading roles in classical and contemporary ballet. He had partnered with world-renowned prima ballerinas such as Margot Fonteyn and Yoko Morishita.

Written in 1812 by the German Grimm brothers Jacob and Wilhel, Reyes tweaks the fairy tale and recreates it, while remaining true to the story’s essence: “that there is might and strength in kindness, great power in forgiveness, and that one must never give up on their dreams.”

Guest artists Liza de la Fuente, a trailblazer in dance for the last 25 years and founding member of the Association of Ballet Academies, Philippines and Bereber will both be playing the Widow Brunhilda role.

Another guest artist, Mario Esperanza, takes on the role of Prime Minister.

Bereber and Esperanza have graced the CCP Main Theater stage as former BP company members.

Two matinee shows will be narrated by Liliane “Tats” Rejante Manahan, a surface decorator-restorer for wall paintings involved in advocacy work for built heritage preservation.

Lead dancers Denise Parungao and Jemima Reyes who danced Odile-Odette in BPs’ 50th season opening production Swan Lake are showcased as the Ugly Stepsisters, roles which demand highly awkward dancing and comedic interpretations.

BP’s Cinderella runs Dec. 6 – 15, 2019 at the CCP Main Theater. Show dates and schedules are as follows:

Dec. 6, 2019 | 8 PM

Dec. 7, 2019 | 2 PM and 6 PM

Dec. 8, 2019 | 2 PM

Dec. 14, 2019 | 2 PM and 6 PM

Dec. 15, 2019 | 2 PM
